This page explains what data owenhsiao.com (the “site”) collects, why, and how you can control it.

Short version
This is a personal blog. I don’t ask you for any personal information and there are no user accounts. However, the site uses several third-party services (analytics, advertising, comments) that place cookies in your browser and collect usage data. Each is listed below.
What the site collects directly
Nothing. This is a static site with no backend database. I do not directly collect or store any personal data about you. You don’t need an account to read anything here.
The one exception is the comment feature (see “Firebase” below).
Third-party services
The site uses the following third-party services. Each collects its own data under its own privacy policy:
Google Analytics 4
Purpose: to understand how many people visit, which articles they read, and where they come from.
Data collected: page views, time on page, referring URL, approximate location (country/city level), device and browser type. IP addresses are anonymised by Google.

You can opt out entirely with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Google AdSense
Purpose: to serve advertising on this site.
Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other sites. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s prior visits to this website or other websites.
You can control this by:

Microsoft Clarity
Purpose: to understand how visitors interact with pages, in order to improve layout and readability.
Data collected: Clarity records mouse movement, clicks, scrolling and page interactions, and generates session replays and heatmaps. Input field contents are masked by default.

Firebase (comments)
Some articles allow comments. The comment system runs on Google Firebase Firestore.
Data collected: the display name you enter, your comment text, and a timestamp. Please do not put anything in a comment that you don’t want to be public; comments are publicly visible.

Font and library CDNs
The site loads web fonts and JavaScript libraries from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com), Cloudflare CDN (cdnjs.cloudflare.com) and unpkg (unpkg.com). These services see your IP address when serving those files.
Buy Me a Coffee
Some pages link to Buy Me a Coffee. Their privacy policy applies only if you actively click through to their site: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/privacy-policy
Cloudflare Pages
The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare processes connection logs (including IP addresses) for security and traffic management purposes.
Cookies
The site sets no cookies of its own. All cookies come from the third-party services above, used mainly for:

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking them does not affect reading the site, but comments may stop working.
Children’s privacy
This site is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their personal data.
Your rights
If you are in a jurisdiction with applicable regulations such as the EU (GDPR) or California (CCPA), you have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of data relating to you. Since this site stores no personal data itself, most requests need to go to the third-party services listed above. For anything comment-related, contact me directly.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the “Last updated” date at the top of this page will change too. Substantive changes will also be noted on the site.
